General Guidelines

• You have roughly one month before registration to familiarize yourself with the topic and prepare for an experimental environment.
• Before registration, you must write a small topic outline document (roughly three pages + references) based on the thesis topic:
  • This document aims to establish a common understanding of the topic and an agreement on the expected outcomes.
  • It should contain ~4 chapters:
    1. Introduction - where you outline the topic area in which you’ll work and describe the desired outcomes of your work
    2. Background - where you briefly describe relevant related work and technologies you’ll work with
    3. Problem statement - where you describe the actual problem you will tackle and formulate (at least 3) research questions you want to answer with your work. The questions may be related to each other.
    4. Summary - You briefly summarize your topic and hint at where you foresee challenges.
  • You will receive feedback on the document, which must be integrated into it.
  • We will not register the thesis before this document is complete!
• The thesis starts on the 1st or 15th of the agreed-upon month.
  • Registration is done using the KOINON system.
  • Your advisor inputs the thesis details two weeks before the planned start date.
  • You MUST confirm the reservation once you get an email with it! Otherwise, the thesis won’t be registered!
  • The ASA then confirms the registration.
• Thesis work time (might be different for your course of studies)
  • Bachelor’s thesis: 4 months
  • Master’s thesis: 6 months
• According to your thesis work time, the submission deadline is the same day as the month's registration.
  • THIS IS A HARD DEADLINE!
  • Late submission will result in a failed thesis!
  • For the thesis, starting on or after 15.01.2024, the submission is online via the KOINON portal.
  • You must confirm the submission in the portal. Otherwise, your submission will not be considered!
• Grading will be completed within roughly a month of your presentation.

Additional Information

• Join the Slack channel for all ad-hoc communication.
• Request to be added to the Moodle course
• Request to be added to the GitHub organization. Your repository should be inside the organization as a private repository.
  • Your data should be separate from your code. Code should be maintained using version control on GitHub, while data can be managed through platforms like **HuggingFace.** However, all data and code should be kept private unless explicitly approved by your supervisor.
• No scheduled weekly meetings
  • The student is expected to work independently and, whenever they require support, will request a meeting, which can be arranged in an ad-hoc manner.
• In case you’re using additional computing resources (e.g., from the chair), make sure to kill your running jobs (including any crone jobs that have been set up) and delete your profile after your project is finished.

Submission Criteria and Grading

• If your thesis is registered via the new KOINON system:
  • The final version must be submitted before the deadline through this system.
  • NO HARD COPY is required.
  • You must confirm the submission in the portal. Otherwise, your submission will not be considered!
